Re: Tasmanian Private Lettercards

Re: Furner's Hotel, Ulverstone Letter Card
Do we know the possible date of this card? It was after 1901 as it is marked 'Commonwealth Letter Card', but do we know when R W McGowan was proprietor? Would that information be in a Walch's Almanac?

Mike

Are the dimensions of 'No. 2' (minus selvedge) the same as the one that I illustrated?

Re: Platypus Reprint with dropped R

Amazing what this discussion forum gets you to do. I have had a full sheet of 6d platypus reprints for some years now, but have never really looked it over. Lo and behold, there is the 'Dropped 'R'' in row 1, position 5, and it does not recur in any position. Thanks for the 'Heads up' Dave!

The series is: DOUBLE PICTURES 1 Russell Falls & Clematis Hut M 2 On Huon Road & Fern Retreat Hut M 3 Cape Raoul & Post Office, Hobart M 4 Smith O'Brien's Cottage/Port Arthur M 5 Blow hole, Brown's River & Gentle Annie Falls M 6...

Re: M & L Series

I have a fair number of these, and have so far identified 5 numeric series plus some un-numbered ones and some double-view cards. (I include McVilly & Little in this general topic). The series are: 1 - 115 (with A numbers and some duplication (i.e 2 views with the same number)) 69295 - 69318 93316 -...

Re: Read All About It!

Well. here is a strike in black on a full newspaper. The date is rather late, but it is suggested that it was struck in error. HTC Black.jpg The image does not seem to be an oxidised orange, as it is a pretty even black, but it could be as there is a tiny bit of orange in the (indistinct) letters of...

Tasmanian Private Lettercards

I have recently set about writing up the handful of Tasmania Private Lettercards that I own. They come in two basic types but with variety within the types. All have an address panel on the front and a picture on the back when folded. The first type was produced by Walch & Son, and it is referred to...

Re: Walch's Tasmanian lettersheet

After a while away from the board, I have found time to come back. I am fortunate enough to be the owner of a full set of mint Walch lettersheets (as I believe is Neil Russell), but I do not know where I have filed them away at present! I must have a serious search. Who knows what else I might find....

Re: HOBART "H.F.A." HANDSTAMP - WHAT DO THE LETTERS STAND FOR?

With due respect to Colin, I think he has omitted one potential source of confusion when dealing with HFA markings. I have a number of covers sent from Australia to the USA which have been inscribed HFA in manuscript. All were to the same destination, and I eventually worked out that the manuscript ...

Re: THE FRANCO-BRITISH EXHIBITION CARDS of 1908 - A LISTING

I have an example of the Prize Merino Ram from the first printing. Again, it would take a while to find, except that it is in the front of one of my albums along with my other FBE cards. My (modest) holding is: An Apple Trophy A Tasmanian Timber Mill British & Foreign Woolbuyers inspecting Wool Cart...

I have a few (4-5) of these, but I note in my listings that I have a double card in the same style of 'The Smelters, Queenstown'. However, it is not a traditional double card, but actually a double half-card. (see below). Thanks for making me look, I found a Mylan card that was missing from my index...

Ladies and Gentlemen

I attach a view of a complex that includes an Aussie Rules pitch and a bowling green. It seems to be close to the sea (the background looks like that to me). Can anyone identify for me please?

I decided that I would look out my material covering this topic as I had it written up on half-a dozen pages. I hope you will forgive me for posting images from the pages with a little explanation. First, three pre-volcano flaws, all dated early 1903 from Invermay(?), Hobart and Strahan, with the la...

Tasmania - The Informative and Instructional Markings

Forgive me for blowing my own trumpet. In October 2008 my small book (A4, 35pp) with this title was published as a supplement to the British Society of Australian Philately BULLETIN. It summarises all the information on Informative and Instructional markings that I had gleaned at the time and that ...

Happy to join this new venture. I note that a number of the 'Usual suspects' are here already. I am interested in almost all aspects of Tasmaniana. However, my main focus at present is on Postage Due, Pictorials (stamps/postal history, NOT cancels any more) and Postcards. I look forward to participa...
