The program for 2011 has been finalised and is available on the Program page
As with previous years the 2011 Program features a wide range of displays and events, starting with the January 31st meeting where we look at a collaborative effort from well known collectors of Tasmanian West Coast material.
An award-winning Thematic collection on the subject of Orchids follows, then an intriguing collection on the subject of the Leap Year
Tasmanian material, KGV varieties, Pax Britannica, Germany early inflation period all offer interesting viewing later in the year. Our regular Members Pages display and Club competition appear again, and last but not least, our female members present highlights from their collections in October.
Visitors are always welcome, and every meeting includes a Sale by Tender and circulation of exchange sheets.
Members were treated to an outstanding display and talk by well known Postal Historian, Randall Askeland, who presented his collections of Tasmanian Postmarks.
Entitled “A New Way of Looking at Postmarks”, Randall illustrated the complete series of Barred Numerals and Circular Date Stamps issued by Tasmania from the beginning of the second Allocation period in 1861 to around 1914. His approach to arranging such a collection is a complete departure form the traditional A - Z listing, and relies on a detailed knowledge, informed by original research about the issuing of Numeral and CDS hand stamps in batches , individually, or in some cases as re-allocations from closed offices. This approach makes the study of these postmarks far more interesting as it links to the Postal History of the period and shows patterns and differences between the various types seem.
. Randall's collection is outstanding in its breadth and depth, many extremely rare and seldom (if ever) seen items being on show
