Re: Photographer, R.C.Harvey

Perhaps a two or three page article in "The Courier" should suffice at some stage in the medium to long term future (we have only scratched the surface .... or should that be the emulsion?.....so far on this topic).

Re: RATED POSTMARKS on PICTORIALS - IS THERE A CUTOFF DATE?

So all collectors of Tasmanian postmarks will now come forward and submit scans of their holdings of "rated" items in this forum so that a new compilation or rarity ratings can be prepared by the TPS? Is that likely to happen?? - I don't think so. As I understand it, the purpose of the current Cens...

Re: RATED POSTMARKS on PICTORIALS - IS THERE A CUTOFF DATE?

thanks Dave .... your post doesn't really fit but that's a lovely piece of "dealer mail" all the same and it's added a bit of "colour" to the discussion! :) In this discussion it has to be remembered that 1)there are collectors who collect cds postmarks on Pictorials only; 2) there are other collec...

Re: RATED POSTMARKS on PICTORIALS - IS THERE A CUTOFF DATE?

Point(s) of Order : I was not critical of the recent offer of the Loira postmark whatsover (please quote the bit in my post where you can see criticism!!). I indicated than in my opinion , the Loira was not worthy of maintaining it's RRR status as late as May 1913 as it is possible to obtain strike...

POSTCARDS ON KODAK PAPER - IS IT POSSIBLE TO "DATE" THEM?

Real photo postcards are arguably the most interesting postcards, especially when they record a specific event. It can be frustrating however if you can't work out the year (or even decade) a particular card dates from when there are no obvious clues like "Peace Arch, Hobart" (it has to be 1919). K...

THE PICTORIALS - EARLIEST USE - PLEASE POST YOUR IMAGES HERE

This is a good place to record early usage* of all of the values of the 1899/1912 Pictorial issue ...that's all printings, not just the 1899/1900 TAS watermark ...even the 1912 ONE PENNY surcharge! Here's my first contribution - a 1d cancelled at Launceston with a duplex datestamp on DE 19 1899 . [...

RATED POSTMARKS on PICTORIALS - IS THERE A CUTOFF DATE?

I recently noted a LOIRA Type 3 postmark on a 2d Pictorial dating from May 1913 offered for sale as being rated RRR . In my opinion, this postmark does not deserve such a rating as it can be found on Australian issues from fairly early in 1913 and strikes on 1d and 2d Pictorials from this year are ...

Re: MONEY ORDER & SAVINGS BRANCH DATESTAMP

Here's a couple more cancels and from same year (1896) - also on higher values. I would regard these as postmarks rather than fiscal cancels because if they were used to pay for "poundage" that would constitute a postal fee (as set out in contemporary schedule of postal charges) and not stamp duty ...

AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS - TASMANIA - Post images/comments here

Australian Customs have used quite a number of datestamps and handstamps on inward mail to Tasmania over the years, mainly at Hobart and Launceston. This venue may provide a "good spot" to create an overview of what has been used to date. I'll start with this curious usage on a large envelope addre...

Re: 1880 - 13/6d Beer Duties - Colour Trials or "Fantasies"

I'm still convinced that they were pulled from the plate much earlier and for a reason other than "per favour" to recap: 1) the colour of the ink matches fairly well that used for various Beer Duties issued well before WWI 2) a lot of effort would be required to produce "pulls" of the plate in five...

one other strike on a pre-Pictorial issue.

TOURIST PROMOTION LABELS - "Come to Tasmania", etc

I was just sorting through some "rather ordinary" first flight covers from the 1930s and flipped one over to find this attractive label which I have never seen before. http://tsauctions.com/bb/come%20to%20tasmania.jpg Does anyone have any information about the "Launceston 50,000 League"?? Montacute closed some time in 1888 - Gormanston opened as Mt Lyell on Jan 1 1891.
Green Books indicate that the new BN59 was used at Mt Lyell in the year of opening.

Re: Manuscript 59

I would assume that a manuscript 59 on a QV sideface is most likely to have been applied at Montacute whereas a mss 59 on a Platypus would probably have been applied at Gormanston although there is still a good chance that it was applied at the office of first allocation. ....does this make sense?
