McCormick illustrated envelopes for A.G.Webster
McCormick001.jpg McCormick back001.jpg Further examples posted of this envelope embossed with 2d die and used 17 September 1909 would be appreciated. The images of the various types of McCormick farm machinery sold by AG Webster illustrated on this envelope are similar to the individual envelopes w...

Planet Jr. illustrated envelopes for A.G. Webster
Planet Jr.back.jpg Planet Jr.jpg I thought it would be useful to illustrate the attractive embossed envelopes prepared for AG Webster (amongst others) bearing embossed imprint of 1d and 2d dies. This example is used 14 December 1909. Images and dates of use of further examples would be appreciated.

Re: Embossed Wrappers - record embossings
There are two possible explanations for the rate applied to this wrapper. My understanding is that any embossed item had to comply with some legitimate rate. 1. Bulk parcels of not less than 6 newspapers printed in or out of the Colony - 1d per lb. or fraction thereof so a possible 5 to 6lb parcel o...

Underpaid Instructional Marking 1919
10 CTMS 1919001.jpg The 10 CTMS marking on mail from Tasmania is common (over 70 examples recorded according to Patrick R) but I have not seen the marking shown in conjunction with that hand stamp on an underpaid letter from Hobart to Indiana posted 6 Nov. 1919. I have had the view expressed that i...

Ian,
I agree it is '206' allocated to Lisle and rated RRRR. Difficult on Pictorials.

Re: EMBOSSED to ORDER PICTURE POSTCARDS - J. WALCH & SONS
A recent item on eBay gives a clue to the source of these cards. Walch & Sons were obviously using similar designed cards (without the scenes) for compnay use in advising orders, deliveries etc. Both sides of the card are shown. Unfortunately the Walch & Sons crest has been erased but from compariso...

Re: Printed to Private Order (PTPO) Envelopes
In response to the posts so far I can add: 1. The main published sources for PTPO stationery are the old and sparse Higgins & Gage listing and more fullsome chapter in Tinsley Stamps & Postal history of Tasmania authored by Owen Ingles. The Tasmanian Postal Guides contain clauses permitting any Firm...

The cancel illustrated is most commonly found on newspapers are most frequently on the Halfpenny value which was a common newspaper rate. The obliterator is know with LAUNCESTON, HOBART names in the stamp but the uncommon obliterator reads LAUNCESTON over TASMANIA

Re: Hobart boxed AR marking 1896
Through the generosity of the new owner of this cover I am able to post a much better image of the boxed AR marking. Rate is triple intercolonial rate of 2d with registration in envelope price and AR fee of 2 1/2d applied on back of envelope. Hobbit is correct, the strike is in blue not purple. This...

Jeff, I have finally managed to get to scanning my copies of the shades you are seeking. Both items are from the JRW Purves collection where they were described as such. Given the vagaries of scanners and colour variation I hope they are of some assistance. The aniline nature of the first block does...

Re: TASMANIAN PHILATELISTS & STAMP DEALERS of YESTERYEAR
Finally I have located some Tasmanian philatelic nostalgia (especially the prices) in the form of three auction/retail catalogues from the 1970's and 1980's. Port Arthur stamps001.jpg For a period of years in 1970's to early 1980's Foscan produced excellent material in private treaty catalogues whic...

Bill, The RPSV library should have the Habsburg, Feldman Australasia sale of November 16-21 1987. In the 'Maxwell Hayes' sale lots 20896 (2d Chalon bisect on cover used at Sorell) and lot 20907 (2d Chalon bisect with 4d Chalon used to Launceston) are illustrated in colour. Both have mss, cancels.
